Our History
In 1986 the Tal family opened the first Designer Rugs factory in Marrickville, Sydney, with just eight employees. Our adventurous designs set us apart from the traditional offerings and quickly carved a niche for the company.
1980's
- In 1986 the first Designer Rugs factory opens in Marrickville, Sydney.
- The first retail outlet opens in Sydney's prestigious Rocks area.
- A high-profile contract is secured with Melbourne's St Patrick Cathedral to design a rug for Pope John Paul II's visit to Australia.
- We begin the first designer collaborations that include collections from Annie Georgeson, John Coburn, and Jimmy Pike to name a few.
- Parliament House commission us to design bespoke rugs for the Queen's visit to Australia and the Bicentennial.
1990's
- The Australian Embassy in Tokyo commission bespoke rugs.This is the first of many embassies to house a Designer Rug, the Australian Embassy in Paris and the Australian High Commission in Hong Kong soon follow suit.
- Work begins with celebrated architect Harry Seidler, who becomes an advocate for Designer Rugs. Collaboration with his office continues today.
- Melbourne showroom opens in St Kilda. It is still the largest showroom to date.
2000's
- Launch of the International School of Colour and Design student awards, which continues today.
Akira Isogawa designs his first Designer Rug collection and his limited edition rug designs can be found around the world. This collection is still one of the most popular. - Launch of exclusive collections by Julie Paterson of CLOTH and Georgia Chapman of ViXEN.
- Student design competition ‘FLOORED' is established with TAFE NSW, aiming to educate and promote excellence in surface design.
- A series of rugs are designed for the Biennale of Sydney and placed in various locations throughout the city.
- Our Parnell showroom opens in Auckland New Zealand with interior solutions company Corporate Culture.
Launch of an exclusive range by the late Indigenous artist Minnie Pwerle. The range can be found in Tommy Hilfiger's headquarters, Amsterdam. - Launch of collections by Catherine Martin, bernabeifreeman, Annie Georgeson and blueandbrown.
- A brand new showroom opens in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
- Launch of Easton Pearson designer range.
- The Grand Hyatt in Melbourne commission a rug installation as part of their major refurbishment.
- Designer Rugs exhibit at Cityscape, Abu Dhabi.
